Triskel ECM Weekend at the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival
Over the last number of years, the Triskel ECM WEEKEND has earned international acclaim. This year Triskel are presenting this mini-festival, now in its 4th year, in association with the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival, as a part of the International Jazz Festival and the Triskel Arts Centre’s 40th Anniversary.

Curated by Triskel and ECM Records, the programme offers a spectrum of cutting edge contemporary jazz that includes debut ECM projects and veteran ECM musicians in double bill concerts, a specially devised concert of classical music from the ECM New Series and film screenings.

Tony Sheehan, Artistic Director at Triskel Arts Centre, said, “ECM is the world’s most prestigious jazz record label. We are honoured to have these musicians playing with us in a line-up which is sure to excite jazz music history buffs.”

The weekend starts on Friday 26 October with ECM cinema: Invincible, starring Anna Gourari (who plays in the lunchtime concert on Saturday 27 October); and Open Land, an intimate portrait of the great guitarist John Abercrombie, filmed near the end of his musical journey.
Sheehan continued, “Anna Gourari is one of the most outstanding pianists of her generation and her concert with Zsófia Boros will be truly special as they are collaborating especially for this year’s festival.”
Veteran ECM artist Dino Saluzzi gives a lot of credit to his instrument, the bandoneon itself, which so often seems like an extension of his personality, reflecting nuances of mood and emotion. “This instrument means my whole life,” he says. “We are together, the instrument and me. Without it by my side I feel uncomfortable, incomplete. Nothing could ever take its place.” He and his group will play in a double bill with the Kristjan Randalu Trio on Saturday 27 October while Kit Downes and the Tord Gustavsen Trio will play on Sunday 28 October.
A pop-up record store will be open for the weekend at the venue. Tickets from or 021-4272022. For more on the 41st Guinness Cork Jazz Festival see

  • Invincible

  • Open Land – Meeting John Abercrombie

Friday 26 October – ECM Cinema
6pm: Screening of Invincible – Werner Herzog, 2001. (133 mins). Anna Gourari (who features in the Saturday lunchtime live concert) has a starring role alongside Tim Roth in the film based on the life of Jewish folklore hero and circus performer Zische Breitbart.
8.45pm: Screening of Open Land – Meeting John Abercrombie – Arno Oehri 2017. (90 mins). An intimate portrait of the great guitarist, filmed near the end of his musical journey. The film by Director Arno Oehri and Producer Oliver Primus also features contributions from Gary Versace and Adam Nussbaum among others.
Saturday 27 October, 1pm: ECM New Series Concert with Anna Gourari and Zsófia Boros
The artists are collaborating in a concert of solo and duo works specially devised for the ECM Weekend.
Anna Gourari is one of the most outstanding pianists of her generation. Her playing has been described as ‘technically perfect’ and ‘dazzling’, an ‘almost perfect blend of fiery attack and poetic magic’ combined with ‘pure intellectual freedom’.
Zsófia Boros’ guitar playing is subtle and restrained, accompanied by a melancholy grace. As the subtleness of her playing unfolds, the attentive listener perceives its quiet virtuosity. Her restraint arises quite naturally from the knowledge of her own ability to become one with her instrument and, thus, never to let virtuosity dominate the music.
Saturday 27 October, 8pm: Kristjan Randalu Trio + Dino Saluzzi Group
Estonian Kristjan Randalu makes his ECM debut with a striking album of his own rigorous yet lyrical music, sensitively played by a trio formed especially for this recording, with US guitarist Ben Monder and Finnish drummer Markku Ounaskari. The trio line-up was suggested by producer Manfred Eicher after hearing Equilibrium, Randalu’s 2012 duo recording with Monder. The featured compositions on Absence are robust, and in the past Randalu has played them also as solo piano pieces.
Dino Saluzzi GroupEl Valle de la Infancia
The veteran ECM artist brings the world famous popular Group to Ireland in this exclusive concert where he will present works from his album El Valle de la Infancia and some of his unpublished repertoire Mozart por Saluzzi. Dino Saluzzi (Bandoneon), Félix Saluzzi (saxophone and clarinet), José María Saluzzi (guitars) and Matías Saluzzi (bass). Percussionist U. T. Gandhi completes this powerful quintet.
Sunday 28 October, 8pm: Kit Downes – Obsidian (with Tom Challenger) + Tord Gustavsen Trio
Kit Downes is critically regarded as one of the UK’s outstanding young jazz talents. Some of his earliest musical experiences were as a church organist and in recent years, he has been revisiting the instrument, exploring its sonic possibilities and idiosyncrasies. For the ECM Weekend, Downes will perform from Obsidian on the TC Lewis Church Organ in Christchurch. He will be accompanied by Saxophonist Tom Challenger.
Tord Gustavsen Trio’s much anticipated new album for ECM The Other Side will be the basis for this exceptional concert in the perfect setting of Triskel Christchurch that features Sigurd Hole on double bass and Jarle Vespestad on drums. Gustavsen arranged several chorales by Bach for the album, as well as one by 19th-century Danish composer, organist and folklorist Ludvig Mathias Lindeman. Bach’s “Schlafes Bruder” has deep groove, led by Vespestad, while Lindeman’s “Kirken, den er et gammelt hus” has a feel that’s alternatively ruminative and rhapsodic, with an electronically shaded intro. “We’re interpreting the church music that I grew up with in an abstract way,” the pianist explains.
