Cork Chamber Assessment of Commercial Rates Deferral

Conor Healy Cork Chamber CEO said

“Cork Chamber welcomes the deferral of rates payments due from the most immediately impacted businesses but it’s clear that more must be done.

We have been engaging with local and national government to secure improved supports and this is another positive step. However the timeframe will need to be expanded upon further and the sectors represented will need expansion as the crisis unfolds. The measures as they currently stand are aimed primarily at the retail, hospitality, leisure and childcare sectors, for three months but ultimately any business that has closed or faced major impacts should be eligible.

Small businesses and SME’s contribute almost 60% to commercial rates, and Local Authorities should be left in no doubt as regards funding during this exceptional time.

Cashflow is a major challenge for business right now and a significant and ongoing review all government charges that impact on cashflow must be maintained for the duration of this pandemic.”
