National Hug Day

National Hug Day

Ronald McDonald House Charities launches appeal for people to send a hug to loved ones during lockdown
Barróg, the Irish for hug, is a soft toy bunny that is sharing hugs and helping people feel close across the nation during lockdown

Ronald McDonald House Charities has today, National Hug Day, launched an appeal for people to send a hug to their loved ones during lockdown and help keep the charity’s doors open amid the Covid crisis. To mark National Hug Day 2021, Ronald McDonald House Charities is asking people to send Barróg, the Irish for hug, to someone you miss and help to support families whose children are seriously ill in hospital. All proceeds from the purchase of Barróg go directly to supporting the families of sick children staying at The Ronald McDonald House.

About the Ronald McDonald House Charities

The mission of Ronald McDonald House Ireland is to provide a Ronald McDonald House to support families whose children are seriously ill in hospital. The Ronald McDonald House provides accommodation and a caring, supportive environment for families whose children are seriously ill and hospitalised at CHI at Crumlin.

Through committed staff, caring volunteers and generous donors Ronald McDonald House Ireland aim to provide a safe environment for families so they can stay together and be actively involved in their children’s day to day life while they are long term in hospital.

The current Ronald McDonald House sits onsite at CHI at Crumlin, one of the three main paediatric hospitals in the country.  It houses 20 families a night from across the island of Ireland. Since opening 16 years ago it has housed almost 4,300 families from across the country. The current Ronald McDonald House on average provides over 12,000 meals a year to these families and collectively saves these families approx. €700,000 in out of pocket expenses annually.

The charity does not receive HSE funding. The charity runs its own fundraising events and relies on the wonderful support of families and donors around the country. Ronald McDonald House Charities is an independent charity run by a board of trustees who each give of their time and service on a pro-bono basis.

Marian Carroll the charity CEO works full time on a voluntary basis.
